Consumer unit or fuse board replacement
If your consumer unit isn’t compliant to the current regulations, it could be that it’s in need of a replacement. If you have electrical works completed like a new circuit or works in a special location at your property, those works require you to have RCBO protection. To comply, we now have to fit a metallic unit as those of a plastic construction are a fire risk, particularly if located under stairs as so many are in our homes.
By having a consumer unit with RCBO protection, you are making your home so much safer than if you don’t. If there is a fault at your home and you have a modern unit, the power will automatically trip within 40 milliseconds! In an older fuse board it would take around 5 seconds and that time differential could save your life.
If you have rewireable fuses, these units are 30+ years old and even more outdated, if you’re having issues with these regularly blowing it would be well worth contacting us to undertake an EICR to ascertain what condition your installation is in. You can do visual checks around your property yourself, if you can see any signs of burn marks around light fittings, sockets or switches, or a green goo these are signs that improvement could well need to be made. It is considered to be very dangerous to have blanking plates missing on your fuse board, for example, as this will leave live parts exposed easily to the touch and is something that needs dealing with urgently to prevent the risk of electric shock to you and your family.
It could be that you have lots of extension leads and/or a low provision of sockets that aren’t capable of handling the more modern levels of electrical usage. We can then talk you through any investigations we undertake and give you a free of charge detailed quote to bring your property up to a much safer standard.
